چکیده

In this paper we explore the hypothesis of an “ad hoc horizon” for wireless multihop networks. This horizon is defined in terms of number of nodes and number of hops beyond which TCP based network services are not useful anymore. We show that with IEEE 802.11 this horizon is as narrow as 2 to 3 hops and approximately 15 nodes. Our results are obtained through simulations by choosing optimal settings (e.g., enabeling link layer feedback but no mobility) and focusing on worst case figures. The main reason for this horizon to form is TCP capture. We suggest that only combined efforts on MAC, routing and TCP level will permit to extend this limit, which can serve as a benchmark for future proposals. The ad hoc horizon also defines a narrow target size for the design of ad hoc routing protocols.

A Hidden Node Aware Network Allocation Vector Management System for Multi-hop Wireless Ad hoc Networks

Many performance evaluations for IEEE 802.11distributed coordination function (DCF) have been previouslyreported in the literature. Some of them have clearly indicatedthat 802.11 MAC protocol has poor performance in multi-hopwireless ad hoc networks due to exposed and hidden nodeproblems. Although RTS/CTS transmission scheme mitigatesthese phenomena, it has not been successful in thoroughlyomit...

Simulation Base Analysis of TCP Reno and TCP Westwood Over IEEE 802.11 Wireless Ad hoc Networks

Mobile ad hoc networking has been a fast growing research area for the last few years. The need for a network when there is no fixed infrastructure is no more limited to military and emergency applications; ad hoc networks can include private and public applications as well. In ad hoc networks, wireless mobile computing devices can perform critical network topology functions that are normally t...

Revealing the problems with 802.11 medium access control protocol in multi-hop wireless ad hoc networks

The IEEE 802.11 medium access control (MAC) protocol is a standard for wireless LANs, it is also widely used in almost all test beds and simulations for the research in wireless mobile multi-hop ad hoc networks. However, this protocol was not designed for multi-hop networks. Although it can support some ad hoc network architecture, it is not intended to support the wireless mobile ad hoc networ...

Achieving Fairness over 802.11 Multihop Wireless Ad Hoc Networks

IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol for medium access control in wireless Local Area Networks (LANs) is the de facto standard for wireless ad hoc networks. However, it does not perform well in terms of fairness, delay and throughput specially, in multihop networks. The problem is due to both the MAC and link layer contentions. Many research papers have been published in these fields. Among them, a modific...

Enhanced Rate-based Transmission control for TCP in ad hoc Networks

This paper studies TCP performance over multi-hop wireless ad hoc networks that use the IEEE 802.11 protocol as the access method. The aim is to improve the TCP fairness while keeping the algorithm as simple as possible, since in previous works the algorithm designs were more complicated. We propose a simple approach to improve fairness based on scheduling (pacing) new packets according to the ...
